Who we are
Head Starts Day Nursery is an independent children's nursery managed and led by a highly qualified and experienced manager, with the support of highly qualified and experienced staff.
Where we are
We are located in Bournemouth with Southbourne, Boscombe, Pokesdown and Iford in close proximity to the nursery. St James Primary, Pokesdown Primary, Corpus Christi, St Thomas Garnet, Stourfield Infants with the recently new Avonwood and St Peter's primaries all within walking distance of us.
About Our Setting
Our safe and secure home from home setting allows every child to gain social skills and confidence they need in their formative years, providing them with a sound platform and Head Start for transition to school life. Head Starts is highly driven and strives for every child to leave the Early Years Stage with respect for others, along with age appropriate skills and experience for their future learning.
You can place your child in our care feeling relaxed, knowing they are in a secure, nurturing, fun and learning environment. Head Starts equally value the trust you hold in us to care for the most precious in your life.
We believe every child is unique and full of excitement, inquisitiveness and potential. We provide opportunities for each child to fulfil their potential by developing their self confidence for them to be happy with themselves and others, by giving them excellent care and a world of new experiences. We encourage children to reach their full potential by challenging our most abled, and swiftly identifying those with specific needs to support them in their progress.
We strive to balance established educational principles and acknowledged values with current trends in nursery care and educational thinking. We plan all activities with the core educational curriculum in mind from the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage, along with individual children's needs and interests and their characteristics of effective learning. These characteristics are different aspects as to how children learn.
The Characteristics of Effective Learning are:
Playing and exploring - engagement
Active learning - motivation
Creating and thinking critically - thinking
All with positive relationships and enabling environments.
Extracurricular and Individual Support
To compliment the EYFS, we extend our learning with monthly extracurricular activities at the setting such as music and sports, delivered by Jiggy Wrigglers and Rugby Tots. These fun and active programmes are excellent for further developing the children’s confidence and coordination skills, and are thoroughly enjoyed by all the children!
We follow the graduated approach in the SEN Code of Practice 2014 for children with additional needs, to support them in their learning and development. Our setting SENCo works closely with parents and children to guide and support them with the individual children's needs.
Children leave us with good knowledge of phonics and number recognition from the excellent letters and sounds and mathematics programmes that are planned by the team each week.
Early Years Pupil Premium
The Early Years Pupil Premium is additional funding from the government for eligible three and four year old’s in their early education. We can claim up to £300 per year for each eligible child to support their individual needs. We work with parents in deciding how best to use the funding and parents are notified by us if their child is entitled to this.
Meals and Snacks
We provide healthy meals and snacks which are included in the fees. Meals and snacks are cooked and served on the nursery premises each day, we even involve the children in creating some of their own desserts too! Our menus are well balanced to ensure children are highly nourished to help contribute to their development and growth, the menus have been approved by the Children's Food Trust. We also hold the highest food hygiene standards rating by the Food Standards Agency. View our grade five food hygiene information here.

We believe that by working in partnership with parents, we can together produce positive outcomes for all children. To help with this, we use computer software to enhance our ability to share your child’s special moments at nursery each day. This provides parents with an overview of activities their child has taken part in, what and how much they’ve eaten, how long they’ve taken for a nap and how their toilet training is coming along. In addition, we provide monthly newsletters, annual feedback surveys, regular parents’ evenings and of course the day to day discussions with parents when dropping off and collecting. We work with parents to help ensure each child makes progress in all areas of development, whether it be with their personal, physical or communication skills. We are also members of the Potty Training Academy to help bridge the potty/toilet training transition at home and nursery, together.
When you choose Head Starts for your child, you can be sure to enjoy the confidence, satisfaction and security you demand.
Whether you are new to using childcare or are dissatisfied with your current provider, we offer quality and excellence for both you and your child.
