Head Starts Day Nursery is an independent children's nursery managed and led by a highly qualified and experienced manager, with the support of highly qualified and experienced staff.
We are located in Bournemouth with Southbourne, Boscombe, Pokesdown and Iford in close proximity to the nursery. St James Primary, Pokesdown Primary, Corpus Christi, St Thomas Garnet, Stourfield Infants with the recently new Avonwood and St Peter's primaries all within walking distance of us.
Our setting is well resourced and equipped as well as safe and secure. It offers a home from home environment allowing every child to gain social skills and confidence they need in their formative years, providing them with a sound platform and Head Start for transition to school life. Head Starts is highly driven and strives for every child to leave the Early Years Stage with respect for others, along with age appropriate skills and experience for their future learning.
Safety and Security
You can place your child in the care of our fabulous staff feeling relaxed knowing they are in a secure, nurturing, fun and learning environment. We have many safeguarding policies and procedures in place throughout the setting. We have a live monitor entry system that allows us to easily identify visitors before they enter the building, a 'no mobile phone use' policy for visitors while on the premises, a password system to ensure children are only collected by those authorised to do so, radiator covers, finger shields on doors and softer land flooring in our outdoor area. All our staff are trained in first aid and we also have our own defibrillator on the premises. Safety and security is at the forefront of our minds, to recognise this, we are currently working towards the Millie's Mark accreditation.
Care, Learning and Development
We believe every child is unique and full of excitement, inquisitiveness and potential. We provide opportunities for each child to fulfil their potential by developing their self confidence for them to be happy with themselves and others, giving them excellent care and a world of new experiences. We encourage children to reach their full potential by challenging our most abled, and promptly identifying those with specific needs to support them in their progress. Children leave us with good knowledge of phonics and number recognition from the excellent letters and sounds and mathematics programmes that are planned by the staff team each week.
We strive to balance established educational principles and acknowledged values with current trends in nursery care and educational thinking. We plan all activities with the core educational curriculum in mind from the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage, along with children's individual characteristics, needs and interests.
Characteristics of Effective Learning:
Playing and exploring - Engagement
Active learning - Motivation
Creating and thinking critically - Thinking
All with positive relationships and an enabling environment.
To compliment the EYFS, we extend our learning with monthly extracurricular activities at the setting such as music and sports, delivered by Jiggy Wriggler's and Rugby Tots. These are included in our fees. They are fun and active programmes to further develop the children’s confidence and coordination skills, and are thoroughly enjoyed by all the children!
Special Educational Needs Support
We follow the graduated approach in the SEND Code of Practice: 0 to 25 Years for children with additional needs to support them in their learning and development. Our setting SENCo works closely with parents, children and other agencies to guide and support children with their specific needs. Parents can access Bournemouth Borough Council's Local Offer here for further information about different services available from the Local Authority.
Early Years Pupil Premium
The Early Years Pupil Premium is additional funding from the government for eligible three and four year old’s in their early education. We can claim up to £300 per year for each eligible child to support their individual needs. We work with parents in deciding how best to use the funding and parents are notified by us if their child is eligible for this. You can check your child's eligibility for the EYPP here.
Meals and Snacks
We provide healthy meals and snacks which are included in the fees. Meals and snacks are cooked and served on the nursery premises each day, we even involve the children in creating some of their own desserts too! Our menus are well balanced to ensure children are highly nourished to help contribute to their development and growth, and these have been approved by the Children's Food Trust. We also hold the highest food hygiene standards rating by the Food Standards Agency. View our grade 5 food hygiene information here.

We believe that by working in partnership with parents, we can together produce positive outcomes for all children. To help with this, we use computer programmes to enhance our ability to share your child’s progress and special moments at nursery each day. This provides parents with an overview of activities their child has taken part in, what and how much they’ve eaten, how long they’ve taken for a nap and how their toilet training is coming along. In addition, we provide monthly newsletters, annual feedback surveys, regular parents’ evenings and of course the day to day discussions with parents at dropping off and collecting times. We work with parents to help ensure each child makes progress in all areas of development, whether it be with their social, physical or communication skills. We are also members of the Potty Training Academy to help bridge the potty/toilet training at home and nursery, together.
We are a Real Living Wage Employer
We recruit suitable staff to join our team and we believe they deserve to be remunerated fairly for their hard work and dedication. We voluntarily joined the Living Wage Foundation meaning we pay all our staff a real living wage as a minimum. We believe in a fair day's wage for a fair day's work!
